A Child's Christmas in Wales

A filmed adaptation of the Dylan Thomas classic Christmas prose poem, first published in 1952. A Child’s Christmas in Wales was a co-production between Atlantis Films, WTTW in Chicago and Cypress Films that first aired on PBS in 1986. The interiors were filmed in the studio in Toronto and the exteriors were shot on location in Montgomery, Wales (Trefaldwyn)

As is true of Thomas’ original, our adaptation of A Child’s Christmas in Wales does not have a tight narrative structure but instead uses descriptive scenes in a fictionalized autobiographical style. Our version of the story is told from the perspective of Old Geraint (Elliott) recounting the joy of Christmases past to his grandson (Reeves). “It was snowing. It was always snowing at Christmas” says the old man, as we become immersed in his dream-like memories.

If you are a fan of the traditional Christmas music in our film, note that we have a PDF file of the sheet music for Towards Bethlehem, thanks to Dean C. Young.

Apparently we had reached a great height in the atmosphere, for the sky was a dead black, and the stars had ceased.
